Today I saw liberty put down her torch
Only to pick up a gun.
I saw justice remove her blindfold
Only to put on colored glasses.
Today I saw a lover shouted down for weakness
And a dreamer pushed aside for laziness.
I saw a violent man become a hero
And a peaceful man become a monster.
And through it all
Innocence fled
Love wept
Mercy begged
And children died.
But everyone was too busy asking
“does liberty hold an M-16
Or Kalashnikov?”
