the wonderful Cross

I spend a lot of time thinking.  I like thinking.  I even listen to Catholic radio on my way into work because they usually have really thought provoking discussions about faith and modern society.  (It’s especially thought provoking when I don’t think I agree with the radio host)

I like to think about some of the craziest things and then, having thought about it, end up dismissing it as irrelevant to living a life of faith.  Questions like “In what order did the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit come into being?”  or “to what degree are the elements of the trinity the same and different and does it impact their unity of activity?” Read more…

Questions we (i) asked on 9/12

This week, two parents in Oregon City are going on trial for criminal negligence and manslaughter.  As near as I can tell these are generally good people, who love Jesus and pursue Him daily while attempting to live as he directed us to do so in the gospels.  So why are they on trial?

They did not seek medical treatment for their premature baby who died.  The parents did not seek medical treatment because they were convinced that the Father would heal the child just as Jesus did so many times in the gospel accounts.  Only He didn’t.  A premature baby died because the parents were waiting in faith for Christ to heal him or her (I’m not sure of the gender of the baby) and the healing never came. Kingdom Seeking

What does it mean to seek the Kingdom of God?  Matthew 6:33 tells us “Seek first the Kingdom of Heaven in all its righteousness and all these things will be added to you.”  But what does it mean to seek the Kingdom of Heaven?

Whenever I hear that line “seek first the Kingdom of Heaven-” I think of a knight on a grail quest.  No joke, a picture of this guy in full plate mail armor on a horse that’s also in full battle regalia going through the countryside looking for this sacred place like they once looked for the Island of Avalon where the Holy Grail was said to be hidden.  Now I know that the Kingdom is not a place you can reach by any conventional means.  If that were the case, they’d have a serious illegal immigration problem instead of the USA. Brokenness, brokenness is what I long for

I want to share with you something that I’ve learned over the past couple of weeks.  For those of you who’ve been following me you may have noticed a slightly darker tone to a lot of my writing lately, and may have even noticed a few frenzied attempts to proclaim a healthier and brighter attitude over myself.  If you haven’t noticed it in my writing then let me tell you.

Recently I’ve been suffering from a not-so-fun roller coaster of emotions made even more interesting by a hard headed attitude that I’m supposed to be happy and cheery all the time.  I even had one person give me a little rebuke about my moods saying something along the lines of “Christians have no excuse to be depressed.”

Now as I said before, there is great joy in our redemption.

(Side note: this post is aimed towards Christians.  If you’re not a Christian this won’t make any sense and I can’t imagine how it will seem so please don’t read on.) Read more…

Forgive me, I don’t get it.

Dear Jesus,

Not going to lie: I don’t get it.  And I’m not alone I’m sure.  I don’t know why you would die for people who are as base and lowly as me.  I don’t understand why you would suffer for us who have never done anything for you or done anything to deserve your love.  I don’t understand how you could do all this and not just for those of us who are thankful but even those of us who aren’t.
