It’s a…

January 21, 2011 Leave a comment

It is not a path divergent
Or convergent
In a mystical wood that looms before me
At impossible heights and leaves me dizzy and
Lightheaded at seeing it.
It isn’t a cliff face
For base
Jumping
Cliff/sky diving
Or that awesome and fearful leap of faith
We’re always talking about.
More like a stop
A road block
A stumbling rock
A castle moat filled with angry sharks
With lasers strapped to their ungainly heads.
In other words
I see a door.
A door currently closed to me
And I can only wonder
Guess
Consider
If this is the right door.
I can only suppose
What’s on the other side.
“I suppose the grass is greener”
“I suppose the water is clearer.”
“I suppose the air is fresher.”
And behind one of these doors it is.
But which?

Taking Inventory

January 10, 2011 2 comments

Someone I know and respect once suggested to me that every couple months I take a minute and take an emotional inventory.  The idea is that by regularly looking at how I feel and how I’m doing on an emotional level I can get a better idea of where I am in my life and what if anything needs to be addressed and changed.  Now I spent a lot of time growing up studiously ignoring how I felt.  It didn’t matter what I felt because there was work to be done.  I needed to get better grades, I needed to do better on my sports team, I needed to impress a girl who was so far out of my league she didn’t even know I existed.

And I didn’t want to feel. Read more…

#ICSEX: Pornography

July 14, 2010 16 comments

Dan King posted on his site about The Idea Camp putting together a week long discussion about sex in our modern society but the conversation begins now with a XXX Sex week topic: pornography.

My good buddy Wikipedia describes pornography as the portrayal of explicit sexual subject matter for the

purposes of sexual excitement and erotic satisfaction.  I however, would disagree and say that defining pornography so specifically is like an alcoholic saying “I’m not drinking, this is beer.”

Please understand that I say this not because I have a hard heart towards the topic, but because I myself, have long struggled with an addiction to pornography.  For those of you who don’t believe it’s possible to addicted to such a thing allow me to provide a little bio-chem lesson. Read more…

My favorite thing about Star Trek

July 7, 2010 8 comments

Some people never fail to astonish me.  I was talking to a Christian brother not too long ago who said he didn’t believe Start Trek was Godly because it was socialist…

For the sake of time and my own sanity (and all the other reasons we could trash one of my favorite TV series) I’m not going to get into that one, but there’s one thing that is absolutely 100% Godly about the age old Science Fiction franchise: they have a mission.

“Its mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.” Read more…

Contentious Christian Issues Pt 4: Conclusion

June 23, 2010 8 comments

As always I want to start with a special shout out to Robert who challenge some of the things I said in my post Christians are weird, get over it. This is going to be a series of posts clarifying some of the more controversial issues Christians are arguing about today that have resulted in our misrepresentation.  Click for Part One,  Part Two, and Part Three of this series.

GROUND RULES FOR COMMENTS: 1) No proselytizing please.  The point of these posts are to share information and educate one another on our beliefs not to gain converts.  2) Ephesians 4:29 - Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. IE – be nice.  3)  The discussion can go all kinds of places, so let’s make sure we stay on topic.  IF I ask that you please don’t reply to a comment it’s because I want to post a more in depth post on it later, not because I think the comment is invalid.

John Wesley

In conclusion, what’s the real point of contention between Christians?  Is it the authority of the Papacy?  How about the Doctrine of Salvation?  I seem to recall a couple of people arguing over the Armenian Heresy at one point, but I don’t have a clue what that is.  There is of course the fun argument of Continuation vs Cessation.   Or we could go for days talking about Eschatology and the question of Jewish Salvation.  Or we could even ignore all that and talk about church in a post-modern world.  We could even argue the immediacy of the Kingdom of God and that’s something that I always thought was pretty well wrapped up.
